The Degree and Related Factors of the Job Stress Among Nurses


Abstract
The purpose of this was to investigate the degree and related factors of the job stress among nurses working in the general wards. For the study, responses were received from 305 nurses working at the general wards of two university hospitals in Seoul using a standardized questionnaire
The results were as follows
1. The mean rating recorded on the job stress of the respondents was 4.62 (the maxi-mum rating was 6).
2. When the related factors of the stress specified in the questionnaire are grouped into 15, respondents turned out to feel the highest stress when they were faced with the poor wages for their service (5.21) , personal conflict with doctors (5.06) and night duty (5.06) . Related factors for lower stress were known to be poor working environment 414), discomfort felt in serving others (4.23) and unfriendly relationship with subordinate staff 4 30).
3. Difference in age, marital status, educational level and the income size of the family did not have anything to do with difference in stress.
4. Respondents have shown difference in the degree of stress by difference in the departments where they are working and by the number of days on which they were requested to do nightshift work. When the stress felt by difference in departments was rated, higher stress turned out to be felt in the departments of delivery room (4.72) , general ward (4.70) , ICU/Emergency room (4.69) and nursery room (4.59) . The department at which respondents felt the lowest stress was out-patient department/central supply room 411). and the stresses felt at operation room/anesthesia depart.ment446) and nursing administration department(4.42) stood medial. When stress was rated by the number of days on which respondents were requested to do nightshift work, those in the category of respondents doing nightshift work beyond 9days per month (4.74) and the category for 6-8days per month (4.64) showed relatively higher ratings, and there was a statistically significant difference between the ratings for those beyond 9days(4.74) and those less than 5days (4.42).
